Last week, Square Pie Guys popped up at its first location outside of SF and Oakland, in Campbell.

Square Pie Guys opened Aug. 5 in downtown Campbell with a ribbon cutting and free pizza for the first 100 customers, with the 65th customer winning free pizza for a year.

Square Pie Guys is located at 510 E. Campbell Ave. The local Detroit-style local pizza chain started in the Mission District in San Francisco. Campbell is the chain’s fourth location and first in the South Bay.

Palo Alto, Walnut Creek are next in line to get expansion locations

The mini chain is doubling in size to include six locations, starting with one in Campbell!

Square Pie Guys has just opened a fourth location in Campbell, at 501 East Campbell Avenue. The new location is going to feature a smashburger that was briefly served at the Mission location of Square Pie Guys, and owner Marc Schechter is also promising some "fun sandwiches" like those being served at other location, on focaccia-like bread made from pizza dough!

“I’m usually a super-thin, NYC-style pizza gal, but something about Square Pie Guys’ crust, the hot honey sauce, and their crispy pepperoni ridges makes their pizza so comforting,” says Han. She also shouts out Arizmendi and Golden Boy as favorites, but Square Pie Guys is what she and husband Vic typically order after a busy service slinging some of the city’s best smashburgers or as family meals for staff. “Their pies dipped in ranch are the way to go!”

Square Pie Guys and their Detroit-style pizzas rise above thanks to their thick-but-light crust, and cheddar baked edge that gives a cheesy crunch to every bite. The precise presentation of pepperoni cups and toppings like garlic ricotta cream and hot honey is also a work of art. Square Pie Guys is a very casual spot, which is why you’ll also find knockout chicken wings, a selection of beers and canned cocktails, and a well-oiled takeout operation.

Detroit-style pan pies have been trending hard for four years but may be on the cusp of being dethroned. Square Pie Guys owner Marc Schechter last month quietly launched a spin-off pop-up called Bar Pie Guys, specializing in pizzas with cracker-thin crusts. They’re inspired by the pizzas you find at Chicagoland bars: light, crispy, and cut into squares.

Bar Pie Guys is a new pop-up from Square Pie Guys serving a variation of tavern-style pizza, or bar pies, which hail from Chicago. Tavern-style is almost the polar opposite of the decadently cheesy, thick, crispy-edged Detroit-style: It has a thin, crispy, almost crackerlike dough. Often cut into squares, it’s the ideal light snacking pizza to eat with a pint.
